Our Story

Set among the pines in Julian, California, The Dempsey is a historic property reimagined for a new era of hospitality.

Originally built in 1912 as Pine Hills Lodge, the property carries more than a century of history and character. Today, it has been thoughtfully reimagined as a refined, design-forward destination in the mountains of Julian. Set across eight private acres, The Dempsey brings together distinctive accommodations, thoughtfully designed event spaces, a pool and spa, and quiet natural surroundings, all about an hour from San Diego.

Designed to be experienced as a whole, The Dempsey invites guests to settle into the property and make it their own, whether for an overnight stay, a weekend away, a wedding celebration, a retreat, or time spent together.

Historic character and modern design come together in a setting that feels distinctly its own: private, relaxed, and connected to the landscape.

More than a century
on the mountain

Pine Hills Lodge opened in 1912, designed by noted San Diego architect Richard Requa as a mountain resort in the developing Pine Hills community. For more than a century, the property welcomed generations of guests for overnight stays, dining, celebrations and even dinner theater. Its storied past also includes boxing champion Jack Dempsey, who trained on the property. In 2025, a new chapter began. Reimagined as The Dempsey, original details, including the Lodge’s oak floors, fireplaces and mullioned windows, were preserved while the accommodations, gathering spaces and amenities were transformed for a new era of hospitality. More than 100 years after its story began, The Dempsey continues what the property has always done: bringing people together in the mountains.

Historic bones,

layered interiors

The interiors were designed by Nakhshab Development & Design to preserve the property’s historic character while introducing a bold, unexpected take on the traditional mountain retreat. Rooms mix original stone, warm wood and polished metal with saturated color, custom tile, Italian Art Deco influences and Gio Ponti-inspired lighting. The arches in the Bridal Suite repeat architectural curves and arched details found throughout the property. Custom furnishings, distinctive lighting and individually selected colors and finishes give each space its own character.
